Your bank statement for a visa application, how much, how long, what gets refused

What a mission is actually reading when it looks at your account, why the pattern matters more than the closing balance, and why nobody should ever arrange a statement for you.

Of all the documents in a visa file, the bank statement is the one people worry about most and understand least. The worry is usually about a number. The understanding gap is about what the statement is being read for at all.

What it is being read for

A visa officer is not admiring your balance. They are trying to answer two questions: can this person pay for the trip they have described, and does this account look like the account of the person they say they are.

That is why a statement showing a comfortable balance can still fail, and why an ordinary salary account with a modest balance can be perfectly convincing. The account is being read as a story with a beginning, not as a photograph taken this morning.

How much

There is no universal figure and we are not going to invent one.

What the requirement actually depends on is your destination, how long you are staying, and what has already been paid for. A country publishes what it expects a visitor to have available for each day of a stay, and that expectation is different when your hotel, your transport and your meals are already paid for on a group booking than when you are arriving with nothing arranged.

So the answer is to read the checklist published by the mission you are applying to, for the trip you are actually taking. If you are travelling with us, ask us and we will tell you what your destination's list says for your departure.

How long

Most missions ask for a recent run of months rather than a single page, and the number of months is on their checklist. Two points matter more than the number:

  • The statement should be recent. An old statement, even a healthy one, invites the question of what has happened since.
  • Most missions want a statement issued by the bank, usually stamped, rather than a screenshot from your banking app. Ask the bank for the format the mission asks for, in the name and spelling that appears in your passport.

The patterns that cause trouble

Nearly every problem we hear about comes from one of these, and all of them are about the shape of the account rather than the size of it.

  • A large amount arriving days before the application. A balance that appears just in time to be photographed is the single most recognisable pattern in visa work. If money did arrive legitimately, from a property sale, a family transfer, a bonus, be ready to show a document that explains where it came from.
  • Money that arrives and leaves again. A balance borrowed to make a statement look better is visible in the statement itself.
  • A balance that does not match the rest of the file. If your employment letter says one thing and your account says something very different, that contradiction is the problem, not either document on its own.
  • An account with no history. A brand new account with one deposit in it tells the officer nothing.
  • The wrong person's account. If a family member is funding your trip, that is often acceptable, but it usually needs their statement, a letter from them and proof of the relationship. The checklist will say whether a sponsor is accepted at all.

The thing nobody should offer you

There is a market in Pakistan for arranged statements and manufactured employment letters. Do not go near it.

A document that does not match your real position is the fastest route to a refusal, because it has to survive being read alongside everything else in the file. Worse, a refusal on the grounds that the information was unreliable is a different kind of refusal from one about funds, and it can follow you into future applications.

We will tell you what your destination's checklist requires, and we will check your file before it goes in. We will not create a document for you and we will tell you plainly if we think a file is not ready. That is not caution for its own sake. It is the difference between a refusal you can fix and one you cannot.

What we do on our own departures

On the tours we run, the visa is applied for by us as part of the package and your file goes in as part of a group, with the flights and hotels already confirmed. You still provide your own documents, including this one, and you still have to be able to fund your trip. What changes is that somebody checks the file before it is submitted and tells you what is missing while there is still time to get it.

More on that on the visa page, and on how a Schengen file is put together in Schengen from Islamabad. Before paying any deposit anywhere, ask what happens to your money if the visa is refused.
